How we pick
Every claim we make about a mixer or a bread machine rests on this page. If we get this wrong, nothing else we publish is worth reading.

We don't test these in a lab. We don't have one, and we're not going to pretend we do. Most roundups imply a test kitchen they don't have. We read the manuals, compile the manufacturer's published specs, do the wattage-to-dough math, and cite our sources. Here's exactly how we pick — and what we'd skip.
What we actually do
We research. Specifically, we work from:
- Published manufacturer specifications — treated as claims, not facts. We write "KitchenAid rates the Artisan at 325 watts," not "it does 325 watts of kneading." The difference matters, because rated wattage and real kneading torque are not the same thing.
- Manuals and spec sheets— bowl capacity, drive type, dough-hook design, program lists, warranty terms. Every spec we quote is linked in the page's Sources so you can check it in thirty seconds.
- Aggregated owner reviews— treated as evidence, but weak evidence. A recurring complaint across thousands of buyers ("bogs down on bagel dough," "head flexes") is a real signal. It is not a substitute for a specification.
What our scores are, and what they are not
Every product carries five metric scores out of 10, and an overall score that is simply their mean. These are judgments from documented research.They are not lab measurements, and we will never present them as such. We publish the rubric because almost nobody else in this category does — and if you can't see what a number is made of, the number is decoration.

The wattage-to-dough math, in plain terms
The question buyers really ask is "will this mixer handle my bread?" — and the honest answer depends less on the wattage number than on three things you can reason about yourself:
- Drive design. A bottom-drive machine (like the Bosch) or a bowl-lift delivers sustained kneading torque more comfortably than a tilt-head, which flexes and heats up under heavy dough.
- Dough stiffness, not just weight. Low-hydration doughs (bagels, dense rye) fight the hook far harder than soft, wet doughs of the same weight. Buy for your stiffest recipe, not your average one.
- Batch size vs rated capacity. Every mixer has a maximum dough load well below its bowl volume. Running a small machine at its limit every week is how motors burn out.
None of that needs a lab. It needs the manual, the spec sheet, and honest arithmetic — and it's reproducible, which is the whole point.
Why a score can change without the product changing
The Value metric is computed against a product's liveprice. So when a mixer drops in a sale, its Value score rises and its overall score moves with it — even though the mixer is identical. That's deliberate and honest: "is this worth the money?" is a question about the money, and the money changes weekly.
How the prices work
- Prices come from the Amazon Product Advertising API, refreshed on a daily schedule.
- Every price is stamped with the date we fetched it. The most recent refresh was Jul 21, 2026.
- If our price data is more than 48 hours old, the number disappears.The button falls back to "Check price on Amazon." We'd rather show you nothing than a figure that has rotted.
- If a product has no buyable offer, we say so and show no price — rather than quietly leaving last month's number on the page.
What we hold ourselves to
Some numbers are only good when they're zero. Ours are:
- Sponsored placements: 0. No brand pays us for a ranking or a mention.
- Free units accepted: 0.No manufacturer sends us product; there's nothing to bias us.
- Fabricated test claims: 0.We never write "we tested," "hands-on," or "in our kitchen" — because we didn't.
What we will never do
- Claim hands-on testing, owned units, or a test lab we don't have.
- Invent a price, a rating, a review count, or a specification.
- Publish a customer testimonial. We have no customers; we sell nothing.
- Let a commission rate change a ranking. When the cheaper product is the better buy, we say so — and you'll find it happening throughout the site.
