Why is my stand mixer vibrating?

Every stand mixer vibrates a little when it runs — a motor swinging a heavy beater in circles around a bowl is never going to sit perfectly still — so a gentle, steady buzz is normal and nothing to worry about. What's worth investigating is a machine that shakes noticeably, buzzes harder than it used to, rattles, or starts to creep across the counter under load. That kind of vibration almost always has a findable cause, and the good news is that most of them are simple: it's far more often an unbalanced load, a wobbly counter or a loose part than anything wrong deep inside the machine. As with any new noise or movement, the most useful signal is change. A mixer that has always had a certain buzz and still does is fine. A mixer that has suddenly started shaking, rattling or walking when it never did before is telling you something has changed — a load, a setting, a loose part — and that's what to chase. The normal buzz versus a problem
Start by ruling in the ordinary. Under load — especially at higher speeds or with a heavy bowl of dough — a stand mixer will buzz and you may feel it through the counter. That's the mechanism at work and it's normal. What isn't normal is a machine that visibly shakes, that buzzes far harder than it used to at the same speed and load, that rattles as though something is loose, or that walks. An unbalanced or overloaded bowl
The most common cause of sudden, heavy vibration is the load itself. A lump of dough riding on one side of the bowl, or a batch that's simply too big or too stiff for the machine, throws the beater's motion off balance and sets the whole mixer shaking — the same way an unbalanced load makes a washing machine shudder on the spin cycle. Running the hook at too high a speed makes it worse. The fixes are straightforward: knead and mix dough on a low speed, keep the batch within the bowl and motor's comfortable range rather than maxing it out, and if a dough ball is climbing the hook and bouncing on one side, stop and redistribute it. An uneven, hollow or cluttered counter
Where the mixer sits matters as much as the mixer. If the counter is uneven and the machine rocks even slightly on one foot, that tiny wobble gets amplified into a shake and a rattle the moment the motor runs. A hollow or poorly-supported section of countertopacts like a drum, turning normal vibration into a loud buzz. And anything the machine is touching — a wall, a backsplash, another appliance, a stray utensil resting against it — will rattle against it. Try moving the mixer to a solid, level part of the counter, make sure all four feet are flat on the surface, and clear anything it's touching. Worn, dirty or missing rubber feet

Over years they can harden, wear smooth, get coated in a slick of kitchen grease, or fall off entirely, and once they stop gripping, the machine buzzes, slides and drums instead of sitting planted. Tip the mixer back (with it unplugged) and check the feet: are all of them present, clean and still soft and grippy? Clean any grease off them with a little soapy water so they can grip again, and if any are missing or hardened flat, replacements are a cheap fix. A loose head, bowl or attachment
Vibration often comes down to something simply not being locked in place. With the mixer switched off, check three things. Is the bowl fully locked into its base— twisted and clicked into the tabs on a tilt-head, or clamped on the pins of a bowl-lift — rather than sitting loose and buzzing against the machine? Is the beater or hook pushed all the way up and twisted to lock on the drive shaft, or is it loose enough to wobble? On a tilt-head, is the head locked downrather than free to bounce, and is the head-locking lever engaged? A loose part is one of the most common causes of a suddenly rattly mixer and one of the easiest to fix. If a tilt-head has developed genuine play — the head visibly bounces even when locked — some models have a hinge-pin adjustment, but that's a job to research for your specific machine.
Beater height set wrong

Genuinely worn internal parts
If you've ruled out the load, the counter, the feet and every loose part, and the machine still shakes or buzzes badly — especially if it's an older mixer that also runs rough, sounds grindy, or has lost power — the vibration may be coming from inside. Worn gears, a worn motor bearing, or hardened, migrated grease can all let the mechanism run less smoothly and shake more than it should. This is the point to stop guessing: a machine that's grinding, clunking or running rough alongside the vibration may need re-greasing or a worn part replaced, which is a job for a service center or a confident DIYer with the right kit for your specific model. Continuing to run a mixer with failing internals can turn a repairable problem into a dead machine, so if the simple fixes don't settle it, get it looked at.
A quick order to check things in
Work from easiest to hardest and you'll usually solve it fast. First, lighten and rebalance the load and drop to a low speed. Second, move the machine to a solid, level spot and put a rubber mat under it. Third, check and clean the feet. Fourth, re-seat the bowl, beater and head firmly. Fifth, check the beater height. Only if all of that fails should you suspect the internals and consider service. Most vibrating-mixer complaints are solved somewhere in the first four steps — it's rarely the motor, and almost always something simple.
