How to clean a kitchen scale

A kitchen scale is an electronic device, not a dish - so it's wiped clean, never submerged. Here's how to clean one properly without wrecking the sensor.

A kitchen scale is one of the most useful tools in baking — weighing flour instead of scooping it removes the single biggest source of inconsistency in a recipe — but it's also the tool people are least sure how to clean, because it isn't a dish. A digital scale is an electronic device with a sensitive load sensor, a display and a battery compartment inside, so the rules that apply to a mixing bowl do not apply here: you never submerge it, never run it under the tap, and never put it in the dishwasher. Instead you wipe it clean. That sounds limiting, but keeping a scale clean is genuinely easy once you know the method, and doing it right is what keeps the sensor accurate and the electronics alive for years. The one rule that governs everything below: keep water out of the scale. The platform on top is usually fine to wipe, but the seams around it, the buttons, the display and the battery compartment underneath are all routes for water to get inside and reach the electronics or corrode the battery contacts. So cleaning a scale is always a matter of a damp cloth and care, never a soak. The basic wipe-down

For everyday cleaning, all most scales need is a wipe. Take a damp (not wet) clothor sponge, add a tiny bit of mild dish soap if there's any grease, and wipe the top platform and the body clean. Wring the cloth out well first — you want it damp enough to lift residue, not so wet that water runs into the seams. Follow with a clean, barely-damp cloth to remove any soap, then dry it with a towel. That's it for normal use: a quick wipe after weighing keeps flour dust, drips and fingerprints from building up. Doing this regularly is far easier than tackling a scale that's accumulated a season of splatter.

Never submerge it or run it under the tap

This is the mistake that kills scales, so it's worth stating flatly: do not submerge a digital scale in water, hold it under a running tap, or put it in the dishwasher. Water getting inside can short the electronics, throw off or destroy the load sensor, and corrode the battery contacts — often permanently. Even scales that look sealed usually aren't water-tight around the buttons and seams. However tempting it is to just rinse a floury scale in the sink, don't; wipe it instead. The only water that should ever touch a scale is what's in a well-wrung damp cloth.

Dealing with spills: flour, sticky and greasy

Different messes want slightly different handling. Dry spillslike flour or sugar are the easiest — brush or wipe them off with a dry or barely-damp cloth, and tip the scale gently to shake loose powder out of any seams (do this over the sink, not by rinsing). Sticky spills like honey, syrup or dough are best tackled with a damp cloth and a little warm water on the cloth to dissolve them, wiping repeatedly rather than soaking; for something dried on, lay a warm damp cloth over it for a minute to soften it first. Wipe gently around the buttons and the edge of the display to lift trapped flour and grime. Don't spray any cleaner directly onto the scale — if you use a cleaner, put a little on the cloth, not on the device — and keep liquid away from the button seams. Caring for the battery compartment

The battery compartmentunderneath deserves attention because it's where the quiet damage happens. Keep it dry — water reaching it corrodes the contacts and stops the scale working — so never let cleaning moisture near it. Separately, if a scale is going to sit unused for a long time, it's worth taking the batteries out, because batteries can leak over months and the corrosion can ruin the contacts. Dry it, then store it flat

Finish by drying the scale fully with a towel, and let it air a moment before storing so no residual moisture is trapped. Store it flat and protected, where the platform won't get scratched or the buttons pressed under other gear — a drawer or a shelf where nothing heavy sits on it.
