Why is my stand mixer so loud?
A stand mixer is never silent, but there's a difference between the normal gear whir and a noise that means trouble. Here's how to tell them apart and what to check.

A stand mixer is never a quiet appliance, and it isn't supposed to be. There's a motor driving a set of gears that swing a heavy beater around a metal bowl, and that mechanism makes a steady mechanical whir whenever it runs — on most machines it's more of a firm hum or grinding-gear sound than a gentle purr, and that's completely normal. So the useful question isn't "why is my mixer loud" so much as "is this the normal loud, or a new, different, worse loud?" The first is nothing to worry about; the second is worth investigating. This guide separates the benign background noise of a healthy machine from the specific sounds that point to a loose part, a heavy load, or wear that needs attention — and tells you what to check at each step.
The single most helpful thing you can do is listen for change. A mixer that's always hummed at a certain volume and pitch and still does is almost certainly fine. A mixer that has suddenly started knocking, grinding, clunking, rattling or straining in a way it didn't before is telling you something has changed — and that change usually has a simple, findable cause. Below, the noises run roughly from the most harmless to the ones that mean stop and check, so you can match what you're hearing and act accordingly.
The normal noise: planetary gears at work
Start by ruling in the ordinary. The defining action of a stand mixer is planetary motion— the beater spins on its own axis while also travelling around the bowl, the way a planet spins while orbiting — and that motion is driven by a train of gears inside the head. Gears meshing under load make noise; it's mechanical, and a firm, steady whir or gear-grind hum is exactly what a healthy mixer sounds like. The pitch often rises and falls a little with the speed setting and the load in the bowl, which is also normal. If your machine has always sounded like this and nothing has changed, you can stop here — that's just how these machines run. Beater striking the bowl: a rhythmic ticking or scraping
One of the most common — and most fixable — new noises is the beater hitting the bowl. If you hear a rhythmic ticking, tapping or metallic scraping that repeats with the beater's rotation, the beater-to-bowl clearance is probably off: the beater is set too low and is clipping the side or bottom of the bowl as it travels. Besides the noise, you'll often see scratches on the bowl or metal-grey streaks in light-colored batter. The fix is to reset the clearance, which is a simple adjustment on most machines — the beater should clear the bowl by only a hair, close enough to sweep the bottom but not so close it strikes. The opposite problem — a beater set too high — is quieter but leaves ingredients un-mixed at the bottom, so it's worth getting the gap right either way.
A loose attachment, bowl or head
Rattling, clattering or a knocking that comes and goes often means something simply isn't seated properly. Check the obvious things first, with the mixer switched off: is the beater or hook fully locked on the drive shaft, pushed up and twisted into place, or is it loose enough to wobble and rattle? Is the bowl locked into its base— twisted and clicked into the locating tabs on a tilt-head, or clamped on the pins of a bowl-lift — rather than sitting loose and vibrating against the machine? On a tilt-head, is the head locked down rather than free to bounce? A loose part is one of the most common causes of a suddenly noisy mixer and one of the easiest to fix — re-seat everything firmly and the rattle usually vanishes. It's always worth a thirty-second check before you assume the worst about the internals.
The motor straining on stiff or overloaded dough
A deep, laboring, bogging-down sound — the pitch dropping as the machine visibly struggles — usually isn't a fault at all but a load problem. Ask a mixer to knead a dough that's too big, too stiff or too dry, or run the hook at too high a speed, and the motor strains, slows and gets louder as it fights the resistance. That straining noise is the machine telling you it's working near its limit. The fix is to lighten the job: reduce the batch size, split a big dough in two, knead on the correct low speed rather than a high one, and make sure the dough isn't drier than the recipe intends. Worn or dry gears and hardened grease
The noises that genuinely point to wear are grinding, knocking, clunking or clicking from inside the head— especially on an older machine, and especially paired with the mixer running rough or struggling on loads it used to handle easily. Inside the head, the gears run in grease, and over years that lubricant can harden, migrate or thin out, leaving the gears running drier and louder than they should. Worn gear teeth — sometimes a sacrificial nylon gear that's designed to wear before the motor does — make their own grinding or clunking as they mesh badly. This is not a keep-going situation if it's pronounced: a machine that's grinding, clunking or running rough may need re-greasing or a worn gear replaced, which is a job for a service center or a confident DIYer with the right kit, not something to force through. Continuing to run a mixer with failing gears can turn a repairable noise into a dead machine.
Small parts: feet, shields and trapped bits
Not every new rattle is serious. A buzzing or vibrating noise can come from small, harmless things: worn or missing rubber feet letting the machine drum against the counter, a pouring shield or splash guardthat isn't clipped on properly and vibrates loose, or even a stray bit of food or a small object caught somewhere it shouldn't be. What's benign and what needs service
Pulling it together: a steady, unchanged whir or gear hum is normal and needs nothing. A rhythmic tick or scrapeusually means the beater is clipping the bowl — reset the clearance. A rattle or clatterusually means a loose beater, bowl, head or shield — re-seat it. A deep strainunder load usually means too much or too stiff a dough — lighten the batch and drop the speed. When in doubt, switch it off and investigate rather than running it louder; a two-minute check beats a burned-out motor.
When to stop and check
As a simple rule, stop the machine the moment a noise is new, getting worse, or paired with anything else wrong — a burning smell, visible smoke, heat from the head, or a drop in power. Run through the quick, benign causes first (clearance, loose parts, load, feet and shields), because more often than not one of those is the culprit and the fix takes seconds. If the machine still grinds, clunks or runs rough after you've ruled those out, treat it as an internal issue and have it looked at rather than pushing through. A mixer that's well matched to what you ask of it — the right size motor for your doughs — simply spends less of its life straining and loud in the first place.
